Special Enrollment Period for Tax Season

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced a Special Enrollment Period for individuals and families who did not purchase health insurance and are subject to the shared responsibility payment (fee) while filing their 2014 taxes.  This only applies to states that are using the Federally-facilitated marketplaces (which Illinois is a part of).   This Special Enrollment period will begin on March 15th, 2015 and continue through April 30th, 2015, and will allow individuals and families who were unaware/didn’t understand the Affordable Care Act’s impacts to enroll in health insurance for 2015.

To apply you must meet the following requirements:

1)      Currently not enrolled in coverage for 2015

2)       Confirm that while filing 2014 taxes, a shared responsibility payment was made

3)      Confirm they first became aware of/understood the implications of the shared responsibility payment after February 15th, 2015.
